Tottenham Hotspur may have to jolt into action if they want to stop their midfield target from going to Merseyside, as Everton have now stepped up their pursuit of a Serie A star who is on Spurs’ radar.
As Spurs try to resolve their legal battle with Nottingham Forest over Morgan Gibbs-White, it has been widely reported over recent days that next on Tottenham’s agenda is signing a number six.
It has emerged over the last week that Spurs have expressed an interest in bringing Douglas Luiz back to the Premier League after the midfielder expressed a desire to leave Juventus.
In fact, some sources have even claimed over the last few days that Fabio Paratici is aware that Luiz wants to join Tottenham, as the Italian tries to add a top-class defensive midfielder to Thomas Frank’s squad.
Everton negotiating with Juventus over Tottenham target Douglas Luiz
It has now been reported by Calciomercato that several clubs have been keeping a close eye on the Brazilian’s situation for weeks.
The outlet claims that Everton have become the first club to make a formal move, with David Moyes’ men having initiated contact with the Juventus hierarchy over a deal for Luiz.
It is asserted that the Toffees and the Bianconeri are now locked in negotiations, with the Premier League side ready to make an opening offer.
According to the update, Juventus want €40m (£35m) for Luiz, having paid €50m (£42.4m) to sign the midfielder from Aston Villa 12 months ago.
Why the door might be open for Spurs to hijack Luiz deal
Interestingly, it turns out that Tottenham Hotspur may still have hope of landing Luiz before the Merseyside club, who are yet to agree on the structure of the deal with Juventus.
The outlet says that Moyes’ men want to sign the midfielder on loan with an option to buy, but the Serie A giants want a permanent sale.
The report adds that Igor Tudor’s men want to trim their squad and raise funds to make a move for their transfer targets, and the former Villa star has been identified as one of the ‘prime candidates’ to be sold this summer.
