Idrissa Gueye received his marching orders in just the 14th minute of Everton's clash with Manchester United following an extraordinary confrontation with his own team-mate in unprecedented scenes.
The Toffees midfielder was spotted furiously trading words with Michael Keane after a United opportunity, with Keane subsequently thrusting his head towards Gueye. However, Gueye then completely lost his composure, lifting his hand towards Keane's face as his temper boiled over.
He was subsequently held back by fellow Everton players, including Jordan Pickford, after receiving his dismissal whilst Keane directed a verbal barrage in his direction.
Gary Neville expressed his astonishment whilst observing the drama unfold on Sky Sports commentary. "He slapped his own teammate - he's gone," Neville remarked.
"There's a coming together between him and Michael Keane. It always looks unsavoury when it's teammate on teammate.
"I don't know what they were having a go at each other over. Idrissa Gueye has gone toward Michael Keane who hasn't really reacted.
"And then he just pushes him and then there's not much in it, there's not much in it. I think Jordan Pickford does a very good job to be fair to him."
Joe Hart, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Live, suggested that Gueye might have been unfairly treated with the red card, stating: "The referee wasn't even close enough to hear what Idrissa Gueye was saying but he was in Michael Keane's face, who is considerably bigger than him and shoved him off with one arm.
"When he came over to continue the argument, the referee just casually walked over and sent him off. Jordan Pickford did very well in the situation.
"If that's all that happened though, it isn't a red card. Something must've been brewing between them two. We'll see how this one unfolds.."
Despite being down a man after the peculiar clash between Gueye and Keane, it was Everton, not Manchester United, who took the lead thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
