Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy feels it is “inevitable” that the Reds will part ways with Arne Slot at the end of the season.

The Dutchman is facing increased scrutiny following Liverpool’s recent downturn in form and performance. It has picked up just one point from the last three league matches, a run which has seen Manchester United and Aston Villa pull ahead in the race for the Champions League places.

With games in the cup competitions against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, the toxicity could quickly increase if Liverpool drops out of both competitions and is under threat of missing out on the top five.

Murphy feels that the supporters have lost faith in Slot following such a disappointing defense of its Premier League crown.

“So the fanbase for the first time in a long, long time has turned and the final point is that as a Liverpool supporter growing up and a player there, I don’t remember, I can’t think of a time where a manager has lost the fan base and turned it round,” said the 49-year-old on talkSPORT.

“I just don’t remember it happening because the Liverpool fans are good at it.

“They don’t tend to turn, but when they do, I’ve never seen anyone get it back. So, it feels a little like it’s inevitable what’s coming now.”

Despite that, Murphy’s former team-mate Michael Owen feels Slot can still turn things around.

“Champions League football is essential for Liverpool, and if they get it, I believe Arne Slot has earned the right to continue,” the former striker told Liverpool.com.

“Yes, there are plenty of inconsistencies this season for Liverpool; you can blame the manager, the players, the recruitment, but it’s small margins as I believe on their day Liverpool have the best team in the league, but just haven’t been able to show it as often as they would have liked.”

Liverpool has lost 10 league matches this season, the most in a single campaign for a decade.

The Reds currently trail fourth-place Villa by five points but sit a place and point better off than Chelsea, with Liam Rosenior also under increasing pressure at Stamford Bridge following a run of one win in six.

Meanwhile, Everton and Brentford have forced their way into the Champions League race, and both are just three points behind Liverpool.
