Harry Wilson has been tipped to make a return to Liverpool, with one of his former international teammates seeing “no reason” why he shouldn’t head back to Anfield this summer.

As things stand, Wilson will become a free agent at the end of the season as his contract at Fulham expires, and the 29-year-old is attracting plenty of interest amid what has been a superb season at Fulham.

Having scored 10 goals this season, the midfielder has been linked with a move to Aston Villa, but former Wales international James Chester has backed his former teammate to make a return to Liverpool.

Wilson came through the Reds’ academy as a youngster before making the permanent move away from Anfield in 2022. Despite making just two senior appearances for the club, he was highly rated during his time on Merseyside.

In fact, former manager Jurgen Klopp was glowing in his praise of Wilson, saying back in 2019: “His shooting is world-class.

“Find me five players who shoot better than him, that is obvious, but the game is about more and that is what he has to improve and that is clear."

Wilson has clearly improved since then, and Chester believes the time could be right for him to make a return to Liverpool.

“I grew up a Manchester United fan so I don't think it would go down very well to have me pitching Harry Wilson to Liverpool!” the former Villa defender told Fruity King.

“I think it'll all depend on what Harry desires. I think he's probably played more football and been more influential for Fulham this season than he has been in the past.

“I think as footballers all we want to do is play football more often than not and be an important part of the team you're playing for. I think it would depend on whether Harry wants to go and continue to be that kind of player or go to a club where he perhaps is used a little less frequently than he would do staying at Fulham or a similar club.

“I think his ability has always been there and always been without question but at the age he's at now, he is maturing in terms of having that real consistency to his games. He’s putting in performances where he's producing more often than not.”

Chester added: “I certainly think Harry Wilson would play if he went to Liverpool. I think the only question mark I would have is how often that would be and if he could go there and become a mainstay.

“I think if he was to go to Liverpool that’s a place that he already knows which may sway his decision and also help him if that were to be a route he chose to go down.

“I could certainly see him going there and having a positive effect with the amount of games that clubs like Liverpool have to play given the number of competitions that they are in.”

"There's actually no reason with Harry's ability and his age why he wouldn't go there and have value to the squad and have an impact on the first team and the wider club."
