Former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole has urged Anthony Gordon to join Bayern Munich this summer, with a Newcastle exit potentially on the cards for the England ace.

Gordon was left out of Newcastle's defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend, with speculation mounting that he could be on the move this summer. The Magpies need to sell before reinvesting in reshaping Eddie Howe's roster.

Bayern Munich, after recent success in buying players from the Premier League including Luis Diaz and Harry Kane, is said to be leading the way, with Liverpool and Arsenal also having been linked over the last few months.

"I love Gordon," Cole said on TNT Sports. "If he gets the chance to join an elite club, he should take it.

"He’s done so well in a difficult season for Newcastle. He’s 25, in peak form. A move to Bayern Munich would be incredible for him. If I were him, I’d take it with both hands."

According to The Times, Newcastle is prepared to sell Gordon for a fee of around $100 million (£75 million) this summer. That is a price that Liverpool agreed to pay for the player back in 2024 before the Magpies found another way of generating cash.

At that point, Newcastle was up against PSR restrictions and needed to sell stars before the deadline to avoid a sanction. In the end, it managed to sell Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton instead, and it managed to keep Gordon.

"I think that comes with the territory," Howe said on Friday when he was asked about speculation that Gordon could leave. "I think your best players will be the ones who are linked with high-profile moves.

"It is certainly not helpful to us; it is not something we encourage or want. We want players who are 100 per cent focused, with no outside noise. Outside noise can affect players in different ways.

"Those players that you mentioned are all super professional, they are great players in their own way, in their own right. We need them to make the difference on the pitch and I would say the same to all the players.

"It is reputations and how people assess you is one thing but what you deliver on the pitch is another. We need our best players playing at their best level and that is what we need from all players stepping on to the pitch."

This summer, Newcastle may need to sell a big name before splashing the cash, despite Alexander Isak's long-drawn-out transfer move to Liverpool last year. Gordon appears to be a prime candidate, with Sandro Tonali also being linked with an exit.

Liverpool.com says: Newcastle dragged the Isak saga all the way through the summer last year. An early exit with a clearly defined fee being put on his head would have allowed it to better prepare for being without its star man, so maybe the Magpies will learn from that this time around. They certainly look in need of a refresh.
