Andy Lonergan was far from the most glamorous player in Liverpool's 2019/20 Premier League title-winning team, serving as the side's third goalkeeper behind Alisson Becker and Adrian.
Aged 36 at the time with a hefty helping of Championship football experience, Lonergan added leadership and served as a key mentor to young goalkeepers like Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros as part of his "fairytale" run with the team.
Lonergan— now the Liverpool women's goalkeeping coach — showed modesty when reflecting on his role with the Reds. “I'll be honest, the role I did, anyone could have done it – that's what I believe – if you're a decent goalie and train hard and you're a decent guy," he told the team's official site.

"I was just in the right place at the right time," he added.
The English goalkeeper broke through in professional football at Preston in 2000, often serving as the club's No. 1 option between the posts over 12 years.

After leaving, he had stints at Leeds, Bolton, Fulham, and Wolves — while these clubs were in the EFL — before joining the Reds as a free agent in 2019.
Lonergan initially joined just to train with the club, but injuries meant he earned a proper contract, and he joined Liverpool on the club's preseason tour. He appeared for the Reds once: in a preseason friendly against Sevilla in Boston.

After leaving Liverpool, Lonergan joined West Brom. He then served as Everton's third-choice keeper from 2021 to 2024, never appearing in a game.
He admitted it's tough looking at the medals — a Premier League medal, a UEFA Supercup medal, and a Club World Cup medal — he won with the Reds.

And two, they're with a Liverpool-supporting friend!"
He's now passing along his wisdom from over 20 years of professional football to the women's team. It helps that the best goalkeeper he's ever seen, Alisson, is still in the building.
“He’s the GOAT. I can’t have anyone say anything [different]. He is the best I’ve ever seen,” Lonergan revealed. “A lot of my coaching, I say: ‘Watch Alisson, watch this and watch that’. Because, for me, that is the perfect goalkeeper."
