Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has urged his old side to challenge Liverpool for the signing of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who could be a free agent in the summer of 2026.
A move to Anfield broke down for Guehi at the end of the window when Crystal Palace failed to source a replacement for the center-back. Oliver Glasner refused to let his star man go if there was no one who could come in to take over.
But Liverpool is still interested in the England ace and having been prepared to pay around $47 million (£35 million) for him this month, the Reds could get him for nothing at the end of the season.
However, Brown believes that Manchester United could be a genuine contender for Guehi's signature, with Manchester City also having been linked with a move.
"I don't see why not," Brown told OLBG. "I'm not sure if he's got a preferred team out of them. Who he would support, whether it's Liverpool or United in that sense.
"He would cost a lot of money though, but it would be brilliant to see him in a Manchester United shirt. Like I said, I think he's done everything he's needed to do to prove to get to that top level.
"Now he will probably himself individually, be looking at can he win stuff, can he be battling in Champions League, can he be battling for leagues, FA Cups.
"I think that's one thing, going ahead in his career, now he'll be looking to be able to do."
Guehi has played every minute for Crystal Palace in the Premier League so far this season. He will also skipper the side in Europe for the first time after Glasner's men qualified for the UEFA Conference League.
"I think it would be ridiculous if I’m going to deny we were close to signing him," Arne Slot said on Friday. "That is so out in the open that that would be ridiculous.

"These things happen in football, it happened to our players maybe in the past as well that they thought they were so close to signing somewhere else and then in the last moment, things change. This can happen.
"For me, we would like to sign him of course, because we were in for him. Like I have said many times, if we feel we can strengthen the team with a chance in the market, we never hesitated to do so and that’s what we tried to do."
Liverpool.com says: If you are Guehi, while you won't be short of options, why would you pick Manchester United? A 3-0 defeat to Man City at the weekend wasn't really a major news story because it has become so normalized.
Guehi also has interest from the Etihad Stadium, according to the Daily Mirror, which would make a lot more sense. Liverpool, though, is thought to be confident of winning the race having already come so close.
