Football finance expert Stefan Borson, who was previously an advisor to the Manchester City hierarchy, believes that there could be more to Daniel Levy’s departure from Tottenham than meets the eye.
According to reports, Levy was completely blindsided by ENIC’s decision to remove him, with the former Spurs chairman only finding out his fate hours before the club’s public announcement.
Many sources have reported that the Lewis family want to usher in a new era at Tottenham, which brings sustained on-pitch success.
It has been rumoured that ENIC are set to inject more than £100m into Spurs immediately as they work towards that goal, but Borsen suggests that Levy’s exit may have a different reason behind it than the owners just wanting a fresh start.
Did Daniel Levy have a dispute with the Tottenham owners?
Borsen points out that the appointment of Vinai Venketasham as the CEO back in April was strange, given that Levy had continued as the club’s executive chairman through the summer.
He suggested that there could have been a falling out among the Tottenham hierarchy, with the 63-year-old potentially being the victim of that.
Speaking of Levy’s exit, Borson told Football Insider: “I don’t think it’s a planned thing from his perspective. I think effectively it looks like there’s been some kind of dispute or fallout, and he’s been the victim of that, and now we’ll have to see how it pans out.
“In terms of positions, it was always unusual from April that they would have an executive chair in Daniel Levy and a chief executive, because usually you have one or the other. “Usually, what you would have if you have a chief executive would be a non-executive chairman.
“While we’ve had Daniel Levy as executive chairman and a CEO, there’s always been this kind of strange question mark over where does one person’s remit end and another’s begin?
“So, the more natural move following the appointment of the CEO in April would have been for Daniel Levy to become non-executive chairman, but Charrington has become non-executive chairman and Daniel Levy has gone completely.”
Levy’s exit had been in the pipeline for a long time
According to some reports, Levy’s departure from Tottenham had been in the pipeline for many months.
Some sources claim that the changes at the boardroom level, including the hiring of Venkatesham, were done with Levy’s departure in mind by the Lewis family.
However, strangely, it has also been reported that it was Levy who persuaded Venkatesham to join as Tottenham’s CEO, which suggests that the former Spurs chairman did not expect the 42-year-old’s arrival to end in his sacking.
