Fenerbahce president Ali Koc has admitted that the Turkish club were very close to completing a deal with Tottenham for Yves Bissouma before the transfer fell through at the last moment.
According to various reports in Turkey, Galatasaray pulled out of an agreement to sign Bissouma due to the midfielder’s fitness issues.
It subsequently seemed like the Spurs man would head to Gala’s fierce rivals, but Fenerbache also decided against finalising a deal for Bissouma.
With the Turkish transfer window closing in a matter of hours, it appears clear that the 28-year-old is not heading to the Super Lig, and Fenerbahce have now revealed why the deal did not go through.
Fenerbahce admit they were close to signing Yves Bissouma from Tottenham
Over the last few days, some Turkish sources have suggested that Fenerbahce decided against signing Bissouma due to the midfielder’s disciplinary issues.
However, the club’s president, Ali Koc, has now confirmed that it was the Mali international’s injury that stopped the deal from going through.
Koc told Fener Ajans: “We all want a number 8. Bissouma was close, but he got injured. We want a smart number eight who can distribute the ball intelligently and play box-to-box.
“We’re working on a young player. Transfers at Fenerbahçe don’t end until the last minute. Those coming in and out never end. We’ll push the envelope until the last moment.”
Will Bissouma remain at Spurs?
Now that a move to Turkey is not an option for the former Brighton man, the chances of him exiting N17 appear to be extremely slim.
Some sources have suggested that Tottenham are trying hard to loan Bissouma out, but this information has been contradicted by other sources.
That includes Fabrizio Romano, who has said that there are no concrete developments over Bissouma’s future at the moment. It thus appears that the experienced midfielder is stuck at Spurs until January.
