Football finance expert Stefan Borson has revealed what he expects Tottenham Hotspur to do in the summer transfer window.

We continue to hear a lot of positive updates regarding the Tottenham hierarchy’s ambitions, but Spurs fans are yet to see the club’s actions match the rhetoric.

Just a few days ago, it emerged that Tottenham are ready to remove their restrictive salary cap to compete in the transfer market for elite players.

We have also heard suggestions that Spurs are eyeing a major rebuilding of their squad at the end of this campaign, after another poor showing domestically.

Stefan Borson reveals if Tottenham will be in a position to spend big

Tottenham look set to miss out on all European football next season, unless they do the unthinkable and win the Champions League.

That may severely affect the club’s bottom line, but Borson insists that the club would still be in a position to plan a huge summer outlay even without the additional revenue that European football would bring.

The finance expert told Football Insider: “I think there’s still a good chance that they get quite far in the Champions League, just because the way the draw has fallen.

“But the truth must be that they’re not going to be in a European competition next season, so that’s going to have an impact. I think it’s going to have an impact in terms of the players hanging around. They’re going to need promises. Look, it is possible that those promises are going to be made.

“They’re certainly going to have financially this season a fantastic year because they’ve managed to keep the wage bill under control. They’ve not spent hugely on football players. They’ve sort of tweaked the squad. They’ve got some compensation that they’ve ended up having to pay out to Frank. They’ve had the Champions League.”

Spurs may have no choice but to spend big in the summer

Cristian Romero has already hinted at his dissatisfaction with the club’s January business, with the Tottenham captain labelling the club’s shortage of players at the moment as a ‘disgrace’.

Borson believes that Spurs will have no choice but to show ambition in the next transfer window if they want to keep their best players happy.

He added: “Overall, this season, I think financially it’s going to be really strong for them. It’s going to give them a bit of a war chest when it comes to squad cost ratios for next season and for the Uefa tests to the extent that they’re relevant next season.

“Of course, if they’re not in Europe, then they don’t need to worry about that.  But I think the bottom line is, they’re going to have to spend some money this summer to keep the squad happy.”
