Five things to do in Greater Manchester this weekend (January 17-18)

  1. The Manchester Derby will be taking place on Saturday (January 17) at 12.30pm. The match between United and City will be held at Old Trafford, with thousands of fans expected to attend. Black Cat Club, in the city centre, will show the match across multiple large screens with an immersive sound system - coinciding with a range of £5 specials on pints on cocktails. Dirty O’Sullivans, by the town hall, will also be showing the game with customers who book a table receiving a special coin which will unlock a prize.
  2. Campfield Market, in Castlefield, reopens this weekend after a short winter hiatus. Held each Saturday from 11am to 4pm, it will feature more than 70 independent traders spanning across art, collectables, food, artisan goods, and baked treats with a mix of classic names and new favourites. It will be spread out across the fully-sheltered indoor market with outdoor food and hot drinks outside near Castlefield House.
  3. A bit of clog dancing and folk rituals will certainly be a unique way of describing your weekend around the water cooler on Monday morning… Fairfield Social Club will be hosting Wassailing, from 6pm to 10pm, which is all about 'noise, togetherness and mulled cider'. Be prepared to 'scare away bad spirits and welcome good fortune'. Oh, and The Milltown Cloggies will be there too for some barmy live performances. Tickets from £5 here.
  4. Popular Northern Quarter record store and cafe Eastern Bloc will be hosting an all-day party on Sunday (January 18) where kids are more than welcome to come along to. Radiance will feature back-to-back sets from the likes of Chris Kevill, Karl Roscoe, Wes Cutloose, and WHP resident Krysko. It’ll take place from 2pm to 10pm, and it’s free to attend. More info here. Good vibes, good times.
  5. Discover Manchester Cathedral as you’ve never seen it before with Luminiscence. Billed as an immersive 360 degree video projection concert, the event brings the architecture of the Cathedral alive, while a gospel choir perform a string of rock and Manchester anthems including from Oasis, Joy Division, Elbow and the Verve.
