Liverpool faces a nervous wait over Alexander Isak's injury after the striker was forced off after scoring against Tottenham, with Florian Wirtz offering an update

Florian Wirtz has admitted Liverpool faces a nervous wait over Alexander Isak’s injury, although the German international has played down fears over two more issues for the Reds.

Isak was forced off immediately after scoring the opener in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday. Having grabbed just his third goal since making his record-breaking move from Newcastle, the striker was left in agony by a late challenge from Micky van de Ven.

Although Isak was able to walk off without the need for a stretcher, fears have been raised that he may have suffered an ACL injury. If that is the case, he would likely end up missing the rest of the season.

Arne Slot didn’t seem too confident when asked about the injury after the game, although Alisson Becker did offer up a more encouraging verdict.

Wirtz - who grabbed his first league assist in setting Isak up for his goal - was a little more cautious than his goalkeeper when he was asked for an update on the striker’s condition.

“With Alex it’s a bit unlucky, I hope it’s not too bad but we have to wait for that,” Wirtz told LFCTV.

The 22-year-old though did offer up some good news on Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, who were also taken off during Saturday’s game. The former was replaced by Isak at half-time, before the latter came on for the Swedish international, only to then be replaced himself by Federico Chiesa late on.

Slot confirmed Bradley had picked up a knock, although Frimpong was withdrawn in an effort to avoid a red card after he had been left incensed by a blow to the face which left him with a cut to his lip.

“I think the others [Bradley and Frimpong] are not too bad but hopefully Alex will be back soon,” Wirtz added.

Wirtz himself raised fears when he appeared to be holding his leg late on in the game, although the former Bayer Leverkusen star didn’t seem too concerned as he reflected on his performance.

The summer signing continues to grow in the Premier League after what was a tough start to life at Liverpool, and he’ll no doubt be pleased to finally record a goal contribution, having been cruelly denied a first strike against Sunderland earlier this month.

"I think I had a few good situations," Wirtz said. "I got into some good positions to create something dangerous for goals.

"It's getting better every week, I can feel this on the pitch and it makes me happy that I can enjoy the football."
