Liverpool attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz was a major positive for Arne Slot even as the Reds dropped more points in the Premier League, this time against Burnley at Anfield.

And the 22-year-old feels he is really getting to grips with the English game now, showing some strong form in the last month or six weeks, during which time Liverpool's results have improved.

"I'm feeling good on the pitch," Wirtz said after netting another goal for his new club. "Also, the connections with the teammates are really good now — we understand each other better on the pitch and I feel this.

"It gives me more confidence and makes [it] more fun to play. I felt that we were really good in the game from the first half on — we played a good game.

"I think even when they scored the equalizer, we were still the better team, had the better chances. It just didn't want to go in again. It's so disappointing."

Asked if Liverpool could take anything positive from the game, Wirtz was clear with his response.

"Nothing — it feels like a defeat," he admitted. "When we had so many shots and so many on target, I think we had to score more goals.

"But some days are like this — you try everything but in the end it doesn't go in the goal. We only take one point but I can only say [in] the next game we go again and try to do better."

The German playmaker was Liverpool's best player on the day but he needed some more support and help from those around him.

Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike showed glimpses but little more. Rio Ngumoha was brought off the bench but he couldn't force a way through either.

"Very frustrating," Wirtz said of the result. "I think, as you said, we had a lot of chances — enough chances to decide the game early. We missed that today. So, very disappointing.

"A few times maybe we could decide a little bit better. But we were also — with Hugo [Ekitike]'s goal, which was offside, I think — a little bit unlucky in a few moments.

"But we have to be better in front of the goal. I think there weren't so many big, big chances but in the end we scored one goal and that was not enough today."
