Thomas Partey has appeared in court charged with five counts of rape. The former Arsenal midfielder was also charged with sexual assault when he appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, August 5.
Wearing black trousers, a black zip-neck jumper and navy blazer, the 32-year-old spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. He was granted conditional bail and will next appear at the Old Bailey on September 2.
Jocelyn Ledward KC was prosecuting the case, while Partey's defence lawyer at the hearing was Emma Fenn. District Judge Paul Goldspring presided the case in Court 3.
As per MyLondon, Judge Goldspring told Partey: "You face six charges, five of which are indictable only, which means they must be sent to the crown court. The sixth charge can be sent if it is a related offence. I'm satisfied it is. In this case [you will be sent to] the Central Criminal Court, you might know it as the Old Bailey, on September 2 this year."
After explaining his bail conditions, Judge Goldspring told Partey he is free to go. "Thank you," Partey responded.
Partey is accused of raping two women and sexually assaulting a third between 2021 and 2022. The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in February 2022 when they first received a report of rape.
Partey’s lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he “denies all the charges against him”, adding he welcomed “the opportunity to finally clear his name”. Partey signed for Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for a fee of £45million. He went on to make 167 appearances for the club before leaving following the expiration of his contract on June 30.
The midfielder, who now looks set to join La Liga side Villarreal, was a key member of Mikel Arteta's squad last season. He made 52 appearances in all competitions and contributed with four goals and three assists.
An Arsenal spokesperson previously said: “The player’s contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.”
