Former Premier League star Royston Drenthe has been rushed to the hospital following a stroke. The 38-year-old Dutchman suffered the illness on Friday.

Drenthe's current health status is yet to be disclosed, but it's reported that he is receiving top-notch care from medical professionals who are hopeful for a "smooth recovery."

The cause of the stroke remains undetermined at this time.

FC De Rebellen issued a statement saying, "Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke. Drenthe is currently being taken good care of and is in good hands. The team and those involved are hoping for a smooth recovery.

"Royston's family is asking for peace and privacy during this period so they can provide him with the support and space he needs for his recovery."

Drenthe first made waves at Feyenoord as a speedy left winger before securing a £12.1 million ($16.25M) move to Real Madrid in 2007. He remained at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2012, making only 65 appearances, having had loan stints at Spanish side Hercules in 2010/11 and Everton in 2011/12.

During his spell at Goodison Park, Drenthe scored four goals in 27 matches. After his contract with Real Madrid ended, he transferred to Russian team Alania Vladikavkaz but spent less than a year there before returning to England and signing with Reading.

Drenthe had a spell at Sheffield Wednesday, followed by stints at Kayseri Erciyesspor, Baniyas, Sparta Rotterdam, Kozakken Boys, Racing Murcia and Real Murcia before hanging up his boots.

He called time on his 17-year professional career in November 2023. In an interview with ESPN, he admitted, "The realization that this is the end is definitely hard to swallow.

"I'll think about that next week. I don't want to become a coach anyway, but something with technical policy, that seems like something to me.

"The focus is now on working for TV. There are some really fun, new projects coming up."
