Chelsea were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday
Chelsea were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain after suffering an emphatic 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. The Blues already had a three-goal deficit from the first leg and lost the round of 16 tie 8-2 on aggregate.
The contest quickly became a formality after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola put the French giants 2-0 ahead inside the first 15 minutes. Liam Rosenior’s side were unable to build any momentum as Chelsea found themselves five goals down overall.
There was still worse to come in the second half as Senny Mayulu rounded off the scoreline for the reigning European champions just after the hour mark. Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah was stretchered off after the Blues had used all available substitutions, ending the night with 10 men.
The result extended PSG’s recent streak of defeating Premier League clubs in the knockout rounds, having eliminated Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal last season. Here is what the French media had to say about Chelsea’s performance.

Eurosport
PSG’s victory was labelled “a stroll in the park” for Luis Enrique’s side, who “cemented their dominance over Chelsea”. The result was seen as the French club avenging the “anomaly” of their loss at the Club World Cup last summer.
Chelsea were “completely outclassed” by their opponents, with the home side “utterly helpless against a fully committed PSG side”. The Eurosport match report described PSG’s performance as “simply perfect”.
Eurosport added that Chelsea’s players were “unable to find a convincing speech” to inspire a comeback. The scoreline was said to highlight “the abysmal gulf in quality between the two clubs”.
France 24
While the French outlet lauded PSG’s performance, France 24’s match report concluded that “Chelsea looked a long way short of the level required in Europe's elite club competition”. Having conceded three late goals to lose the first leg 5-2, the report claimed that “Liam Rosenior's team never really appeared to believe” that a comeback was possible.
France 24 praised Kvratskhelia for outmuscling Chelsea defender Mamadou Sarr for the opening goal. When Barcola doubled PSG’s lead, “home fans began flooding for the exits”. It was summed up as a “miserable evening for Chelsea”.
L’Equipe
L’Equipe delivered a brutal assessment of Chelsea’s display, describing PSG as “extinguishing the light and hope in its opponent”. The early goals were said to have returned Stamford Bridge “to silence and resignation”.
The French outlet argued that there was “little point in analysing the match over its entirety: it lasted a quarter of an hour”. However, Enrique’s team was praised for stunning Chelsea and being “utterly ruthless” from the outset.
Looking back at how the club had performed since scoring three late goals in the first leg, L’Equipe said that “PSG calmly inflicted a 6-0 thrashing on their somewhat cheeky nemesis”.
As for Chelsea, the report stated that the Blues “only really showed up when it was too late and it no longer made much sense”.
