Furious Chelsea fans turn on Enzo Maresca as Cole Palmer decision backfires

CHELSEA 2-2 BOURNEMOUTH: Chelsea fans were furious with Enzo Maresca and chanted "you don't know what you're doing" after Cole Palmer was replaced in the second-half

Chelsea were once again stung by long throw-ins as Antoine Semenyo had a big part to play in potentially his final bow for Bournemouth in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The Cherries took the lead through David Brooks after a Semenyo launch caused chaos in the Blues’ box, though the visitors’ lead did not last too long. Cole Palmer converted from the penalty spot, just eight minutes before Enzo Fernandez put the Blues ahead.

The frantic start to the match continued when another long throw caught the home side out in west London. Semenyo’s throw came off Trevoh Chalobah’s head and Justin Kluivert was on hand to tap in at the far post.

No team has conceded more goals than the Blues - with four - in the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca made five changes to the side that were beaten by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge 72 hours before. Marc Cucurella missed out due to a hamstring issue, with Malo Gusto replacing the Spaniard on the left-hand side of defence, while Josh Acheampong, Estevao Willian, Wesley Fofana and Liam Delap also came into the XI.

Andoni Iraola, meanwhile, made four changes to his side that lost to Brentford at the weekend. Semenyo started for the Cherries despite increasing speculation that he is set to join Manchester City in the coming days.

Just seven minutes in and Semenyo played a huge role in the opening goal of the game. The Ghanaian’s long throw caused havoc in the Chelsea box and Brooks found himself with a close-range header that was initially saved by Robert Sanchez, but the Cherries captain scored on the rebound.

The lead didn’t last long, however, with Estevao Willian winning a penalty after being fouled by Semenyo. Referee Sam Barrott waved suggestions of a penalty away initially but changed his mind after being advised to go to the pitchside screen.

Palmer expertly put his corner into the bottom corner and beat Djordje Petrovic, despite the former Chelsea goalkeeper guessing the right way.

Around eight minutes later, the Blues were ahead through Fernandez. Alejandro Garnacho laid the ball off to his Argentine compatriot before the midfielder unleashed a thunderous strike into the top right-hand corner.

Chelsea, though, could not deal with Bournemouth’s most deadly weapon in the form of Semenyo’s arms. The soon-to-be Man City winger once again launched one into the box and it deflected off Chalobah’s head before being met by a thankful Kluivert.

At half-time, the score was level, but Bournemouth may well have felt aggrieved. The Cherries recorded 13 shots - the most they have ever had in any away match in the Premier League.

Delap had a chance to restore Chelsea’s lead on 55 minutes after a swift Blues counter-attack but the striker’s header was comfortably over.

Palmer was taken off on 63 minutes in place of Joao Pedro, with some of the home supporters booing Maresca’s decision and some were heard chanting "you don't know what you're doing".

Estevao, who was Chelsea’s best player on the night, came close to giving his side the lead moments after but his effort was well saved by Petrovic.

Fernandez had the chance to win it for the Blues on 77 minutes but his effort inside the box went comfortably over the crossbar.

It is now three games without a win in the Premier League for the Blues, while Bournemouth’s long wait for an away victory in the top-flight continues.
