Gary Neville maintains Arsenal could prove to be the most formidable outfit in the Premier League this campaign, despite Liverpool continuing to occupy the summit. The Gunners orchestrated a remarkable turnaround to claim a dramatic late 2-1 victory at Newcastle United on Sunday.
Gabriel Magalhaes struck a stunning 96th-minute winner after Mikel Merino's equaliser cancelled out Nick Woltemade's opener just moments before.
The victory catapulted Arsenal back into second position in the Premier League and narrowed the deficit to leaders Liverpool to just two points.
Mikel Arteta's men looked set to fall five points adrift before their breathtaking late resurgence, having witnessed the reigning Premier League champions waste the opportunity to extend their advantage on Saturday after a dramatic injury-time loss at Crystal Palace.
Neville was captivated by Arsenal's metamorphosis at St. James' Park, coming merely seven days after they had ceded ground to Arne Slot's side following their 1-1 stalemate with Manchester City, who demolished Burnley 5-1 on Saturday.
Having proclaimed that Liverpool and Arsenal represent the sole contenders capable of claiming the title this term, the Manchester United legend delivered a stark caution to the Reds after the Gunners' magnificent triumph.
"Mikel Arteta has got a brilliant squad,' Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast. "He's got a brilliant squad.
"I think he's got the best squad in the league and maybe the best team in the league and I say that quietly because Liverpool are excellent.
"There's only two teams who can win this league – Liverpool and Arsenal – I don't think anyone else can.
"So I think it's a big moment. It's only September and it's ridiculous to be speaking like this as someone who experienced title races.
"But what you've got to do is send out some calling cards and some clear messages that you're there in the title race and I think that's what Arsenal have done today. A week ago the glass was half empty, now it's more than half full. Liverpool lose, Arsenal win in stunning fashion.
"They deserve it, they were the better football team. [Arteta] made really good subs, he started with a strong team. That will give them huge confidence. You shouldn't have swing weekends this early. But the Liverpool players sitting at home watching this will perhaps sink slightly."
