Gary Neville's succinct remark on Liverpool after Premier League title twist

2 hours ago 1

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville offered a succinct five-word verdict on Liverpool following Arsenal's dramatic late triumph that has intensified the Premier League title battle.

The Reds suffered their maiden defeat of the campaign on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Liverpool's impressive early-season displays had seen them build a commanding five-point lead at the Premier League's pinnacle heading into Sunday's fixtures, though that cushion has since been trimmed after Arsenal's victory.

The Gunners claimed a thrilling 2-1 triumph over Newcastle in extraordinary fashion at St. James' Park, cutting the gap between themselves and Liverpool to merely two points.

Arsenal found itself trailing 1-0 as the match entered its 84th minute before strikes from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes allowed Mikel Arteta's side to secure all three points on Tyneside.

It was moments after Gabriel had found Arsenal's decisive goal that Neville shared his thoughts on Liverpool's situation.

Whilst commentating for Sky Sports, Neville observed: "Liverpool players' hearts sinking slightly."

The Reds concluded the previous campaign 10 points clear of Mikel Arteta's team and will be eager to maintain a similar margin when the 2025-26 season reaches its conclusion.

Liverpool will now turn its attention to European competition, as it prepares for a challenging away game against Galatasaray in Turkey on Tuesday in the Champions League.

After that continental clash, the Premier League returns next weekend when the Reds travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in their final outing before the October international break.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will tackle Olympiacos in the Champions League during the midweek period.

The Gunners will then welcome West Ham for a London derby at the Emirates in their concluding fixture before the two-week pause for international duty.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reflected on their dramatic late victory: "Unbelievable feeling. That's what football is about.

"As a team when you get what you deserve right at the end, there's not a better feeling than that."

He added: "The belief, the conviction of the team that we are and how we can play various types of games and the team still can deliver and win it in a convincing way.

"For me today at one of the most difficult grounds – again, praise Newcastle, the way they play, compete, how difficult it is to play at this place, but the team really took their game to a different level and I'm very proud to see that."
