Gary Neville has weighed in on a chaotic moment in Liverpool’s match on Saturday, describing the incident involving Cristian Romero and Ibrahima Konate as sheer madness.

Romero kicked out at Konate while both were on the ground, earning the Tottenham captain a second yellow card, reducing his side to nine men.

Thomas Frank’s side was reduced to 10 men just 30 minutes in when Xavi Simons made a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk. The initial yellow card was upgraded to a red following a VAR review. Referee John Brooks stated the reason was due to the challenge being high up the calf with his studs up.

On the Romero red card, speaking on commentary for Sky Sports Neville said: "What is Romero doing? Who is he shouting at now?

"Get in the dressing room! It is absolute madness from him."

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Andy Reid on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium said: "It's ridiculous, trying to look at the replay and it looks like Cristian Romero has kicked out at Ibrahima Konate.

"Ridiculous from Romero, completely unnecessary, his team are on the front foot, and then he gets himself sent off."

Former Premier League referee Darren Cann on the BBC added: "It's a petulant kick out at Konate - and that's without doubt a second yellow for Romero. John Brooks had no option other than to send him off for a second booking."

Speaking after the game, former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp said: "What Romero did is what Romero does. To get involved right in front of the referee and kick out at someone right in front of the referee.

If my four-year-old did that, I would say, 'What are you doing?'"

Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike propelled Liverpool into Champions League positions as Arne Slot’s side held on to a hard-fought win over Spurs.

Isak opened the scoring with a composed finish but was brought down by Micky van de Ven in the process, requiring assistance off the field. Ekitike soon doubled the lead before Richarlison pulled one back for Spurs.

On the craziness of the game, Ekitike told Sky Sports: “That’s part of football. The fans of Spurs have been unbelievable today, they pushed them really hard so it was difficult for us. We have our fans as well, who were great today. They pushed us and we kept the result.

“When they score, we saw they were pushing, and it was difficult for us. But I think we had control of the game if we take the total of the game, we deserved to win today.”
