Giorgi Mamardashvili's last 5 games assessed as Liverpool's new goalkeeper gets chance

6 hours ago 2

While the full extent of Alisson Becker's injury is not yet known, Arne Slot was able to confirm that Liverpool will be without the Brazilian against Chelsea on Saturday meaning Giorgi Mamardashvili is in line for his Premier League debut.

But how has the 25-year-old played in his previous performances? He's only played four times competitively since leaving Valencia at the end of last season, but Mamardashvili is set for another chance now.

Traveling to Stamford Bridge at the weekend, he will be thrown into the action from the off in a big game where Liverpool could do with getting a win as it aims to get back on track after a tricky week. Here, we've taken a look at how Mamardashvili got on during each of his last five appearances...

Galatasaray (Champions League) - Mamardashvili wasn't brought on until the 56th minute when Alisson went down, but he kept a clean sheet during the period he was on the field. His distribution was decent enough, but he didn't have to make a save.

Southampton (League Cup) - Making two saves here, Mamardashvili was a decent performer. He couldn't do anything with Shea Charles' goal, with a poor Wataru Endo header teeing him up, though he wasn't hugely tested.

Bulgaria (World Cup Qualifying) - Georgia won 3-0 with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nika Gagnidze and Georges Mikautadke. Mamardashvili made two saves but he would have expected to keep a clean sheet from the limited threat he faced.

Turkiye (World Cup Qualifying) - Georgia lost this game 3-2, with Mamardashvili conceding three times. He didn't make a save in the game and let in around one goal more than statistically expected.

Athletic Club (Friendly) - In his first appearance at Anfield, Mamardashvili played 90 minutes and made two saves. His passing was strong and he could do nothing with the two shots that flew past him and into the goal.

Before the summer, Mamardashvili was number one for Valencia. His final appearance was a 1-1 draw against Real Betis which saw the Spanish outfit finish 12th in La Liga.

He will start against Chelsea at the weekend and then Georgia faces Spain and Turkiye in World Cup qualifying. After that, whether he stays in the Liverpool team will depend on the severity of Alisson's injury.

"Ali [Becker] helped me a lot to improve," Mamardashvili said ahead of his competitive debut against Southampton. "When I was a child, it was like a dream to meet players like Alisson, Virgil [van Dijk] and Mo [Salah].

"Now I'm with them and I'm so happy. There are a lot of quality players. I knew it before but what I saw is crazy, it's really crazy."

The last player to wear the number 25 for Liverpool was also a goalkeeper: Pepe Reina. He made almost 400 appearances for the Reds between 2005 and 2013.

Explaining his selection, Mamardashvili said: "My father was a goalkeeper as well, so he played with 25. I continue this legacy, I guess. I met Pepe at Villarreal when I played against him. He's a very good guy, very good person and a very good goalkeeper as well."
