The prospect of Harry Wilson returning to Liverpool on a free transfer this summer has not been ruled out.

Wilson has been an extremely productive player for Fulham this season, registering eight goals and five assists in the Premier League, but is coming to the end of his contract with the West London club, having played there since 2021.

Given his brilliance at Craven Cottage, the expectation is that he will move to a bigger club as a free agent in the off-season, and it has been suggested that he could even return to Anfield as a budget addition to Arne Slot's squad.

Wilson began his career at Liverpool, joining the Reds' academy as a young boy in 2005, going on to make his full debut in 2017, before leaving to join Fulham in 2021.

During his time on Liverpool's books, he also spent time on loan at Crewe Alexandra, Hull City, Derby County, Bournemouth, Cardiff City and Fulham.

Wilson only played twice for Liverpool's first team, with neither of those appearances coming in the Premier League, and few people envisaged when he left that he would ever be linked with a return to the club in the future.

However, it is to Wilson's credit that he is the subject of speculation over a move to Liverpool.

Given Wilson's age – he turns 29 in March – it would usually be unlikely that Liverpool would move for him due to its policy of preferring to sign players who are in their mid-20s or younger, but the Liverpool Echo's chief Liverpool correspondent, Ian Doyle, is not ruling out an opportunistic move due to his contract situation.

In a question and answer session with the Liverpool Echo's readers, Doyle said: "Wilson will be available on a free transfer this summer, although Fulham haven't given up hope of agreeing a new contract with the Wales international.

"Given he will be 29 in the summer, there's little chance under Fenway Sports Group's usual transfer policy that Liverpool would be interested if there was a fee involved.

"Would you take him as a squad option? Absolutely, especially with Liverpool needing to bolster their overall numbers. He knows the club and has plentiful experience at Premier League and international level.

"Could he be a direct replacement for Salah? That job perhaps will go to someone else. But the real question is whether Wilson would want to return to being a squad player having been a top-flight regular since leaving Anfield in 2021."
