Manchester City finished eighth in the league phase of the Champions League while Arsenal topped the table
Manchester City have so far earned approximately £900,000 more than Arsenal in the Champions League despite finishing eighth in the league phase. Last week, MEN Sport reported City had earned approximately £42m thanks to their performances on the pitch in the Champions League - including five wins and a draw in their eight games.
Arsenal earned more for their performances on the pitch having won all of their eight games in the league phase. Despite this, City have managed to bag themselves £84m from the Champions League, while the Gunners have only managed to bank £83.1m, according to the Swiss Ramble football finance blog.
It is understood City and Liverpool have both earned more than Arsenal because of their performances in European competitions over the last 10 years. The Blues managed to perform better than the north London club in the ‘value pillar’ section of Champions League earnings.

This is worked out based upon the value of a country’s media market, combined with individual clubs’ performances in Europe over the last five and 10 years in UEFA’s coefficient rankings. According to Swiss Ramble, City were the top earning club in England in this sector due to their consistent appearances in the Champions League.
Therefore, Pep Guardiola's side bagged a staggering £39m, while Liverpool managed to earn £37.2m and Arsenal just £32m. This £7m shortfall for the Gunners means City have secured more money than the Premier League leaders in the Champions League so far this season.
Of course, this is not the final figure City will make from the Champions League this term. Should the Blues win the competition and then the Super Cup in August, they will bank £49.8m. City will also bank prize money along the way.
