How Manor Solomon could dent Tottenham dreams of Champions League knockouts

Tottenham Hotspur managed to agree a loan deal for Manor Solomon on transfer deadline day, but the winger may be eager to leave Spurs with egg on their faces.

Manor Solomon has already spent most of his time as a Tottenham Hotspur player on loan at Leeds United. His absence in North London will continue as Solomon completed a loan move to Villarreal on transfer deadline day.

Spurs have been drawn to face Villarreal in the Champions League and there will already be some tension between the sides. Villarreal signed Thomas Partey this summer, and the former Arsenal midfielder will be in court the day before the match due to a rape charge (Independent).

Due to a UEFA rule, Spurs are also set for a reunion with a player who did not exactly win any popularity contests with the supporters.

Manor Solomon is eligible to play against Tottenham

Due to UEFA rules, which allow players on loan to compete against their parent club, Solomon will be able to line up against Spurs in just two weeks’ time.

Manor Solomon will play at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after all this season – on September 16th for Villarreal. Crazy #DeadlineDay for Solomon after #CPFC pulled plug. Loan to Villarreal suits all parties. No movement for Yves Bissouma but Turkish window open until 11th #thfc

The Israeli international was close to joining Crystal Palace until the Eagles pulled the plug on a move. Solomon would not have been allowed to play against Tottenham if he had moved to South London, because the rules are different in the Premier League.

The UEFA rule will actually help Tottenham because it means Randal Kolo Muani will be free to face PSG. Spurs will need all the help they can get as they take on the champions of Europe in a rematch of the UEFA Super Cup.

A former Tottenham player once haunted his parent club

Jan Vertonghen is well-loved by all those associated with Tottenham Hotspur, but his relationship with his first senior club is a little more complex. The defender was loaned out by Ajax when he was only months into his senior career.

With four games of the Eredivisie season remaining, Vertonghen scored against Ajax and the Dutch side went on to lose out on the league title to PSV Eindhoven on goal difference.

Spurs will be looking to avoid a similar type of horror story with the winger who was recently offloaded. Solomon wanted to stay at Tottenham and so he will be looking to prove a point when the two teams fight it out on Europe’s biggest stage.
