Mohamed Salah's sudden announcement he will leave Liverpool has come as a boost for Arsenal as they watch their rivals head toward transfer disaster

Mohamed Salah is finally bringing his career with Liverpool to a close, a decision that will bring joy to many clubs he caused plenty of problems down the years including Arsenal. Were it not for the Egyptian, the Gunners might have won the title last season, but the winger had one of the best campaigns of his career and dragged Arne Slot’s side to victory.

It is perhaps little surprise that where his form has dropped off this season, Liverpool’s hopes of back-to-back titles have faded into obscurity. Perhaps a bigger blow to the Reds over the fact their most talismanic figure is leaving, however, is the fact he will leave before the end of his current deal and without bringing in a transfer fee for the club.

This will certainly please their rivals like Arsenal who would have thought a Salah exit would have given Liverpool plenty of money to spend replacing him. Liverpool are already under some financial pressure.

Like Arsenal, Liverpool aim to run themselves in a self-sufficient manner, and therefore the belief is sales will be necessary in the summer with some big names like Alexis Mac Allister already being touted as a potential outgoing.

Arsenal hope to win the league this season and, unlike Liverpool, maintain their competitive level at the top. Winning the league is not seen internally as the end of the process but instead the start of a period of dominance with Arteta at the forefront.

More signings are planned for the summer to strengthen the attack in particular. Despite spending a huge sum in the summer, Liverpool’s investment has not returned the desired outcome.

Using their status as title winners and the available funds after spending very little in 2024, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, among others, were convinced to sign and for serious fees. But they have done enough collectively to improve the side beyond last season’s performances.

Salah’s exit, combined with these ongoing struggles and a need to invest in the summer, which could yet see more established talent leave, means once again Slot’s team could be considered in something of a transition. Worse still, Champions League qualification is not yet certain, and without that, it could mean even greater financial restriction.

Arsenal will certainly take encouragement in that and view Manchester City as again their only true viable contender for next season’s title.
