Pep Guardiola has all but completed a blockbuster deal for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Manchester City is pulling out all the stops to secure him, and it's believed the England defender could complete a transfer to the Etihad as early as Friday. This is a hammer blow for Liverpool, the team that missed out on signing Guehi on deadline day last summer.

It's believed Guehi's transfer could be worth more than £30 million ($40.2 million), but there are also reports claiming that City will pay as little as £20 million ($26.8 million) for the 25-year-old. Liverpool fans will be asking why their club didn't pay the cash.

This is a significant boost to City's Premier League title aspirations. As well as Liverpool, Arsenal and Bayern Munich were also keen on signing Guehi.

City manager Guardiola is eager to bolster his defensive ranks this month amid an injury crisis that has sidelined Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, with John Stones also spending time on the treatment table.

Guehi only has six months remaining on his Palace contract and made it clear he won't be penning a new deal.

City emerged as the frontrunner for Guehi, although it was initially anticipated that this transfer would happen this summer as a free agent.

However, City has accelerated its interest and is prepared to splash the cash again this month, having already signed Antoine Semenyo for £64 million ($85.8 million) from Bournemouth.

This is a bold move from City, and the contract offer for Guehi will need to be substantial to seal the deal.

With just six months left on his contract, Guehi could easily command a lucrative deal as a free agent, while also having his pick of clubs across Europe.

This has put City in a situation where the club is offering a more substantial contract to match what he could have earned as a free agent in the summer.

It could end up being an unprecedented transfer fee for a player with just six months remaining on his contract.

Palace has been hesitant to sell, but is aiming for around £40 million ($53.6 million) to balance the books, while City may need to exceed $40 million and find a middle ground.

But, if other reports are to be believed, City may have got him on the cheap for a little over $26 million.
