Tottenham Hotspur raked in a whole lot of Champions League prize money this season, and they will be desperate to spend it this summer after avoiding relegation.

Spurs are staring at the possibility of being relegated from the Premier League for the first time in nearly half a century.

They stand just one point from the relegation zone with eight league games to play, starting with a huge six-pointer against relegation rivals Nottingham Forest this Sunday.

According to reports, Tottenham could miss out on losses of £250m if they go down, which the club will be desperate to avoid under all circumstances, but it has now been revealed that they have already received a financial blow after their loss to Atletico Madrid over two legs.

Tottenham miss out on significant Champions League funds after elimination

Football Insider have now revealed that Spurs’ coffers have been boosted significantly as a result of getting to the final 16 of the Champions League.

Each team received a guaranteed £16.1m for competing in the Champions League this season, while further prize money was handed to teams for each win, their position in the league phase, and direct qualification for the final 16.

Clubs were awarded £1.8m for each win and £605,000 for a draw in the League Phase, meaning Spurs earned £9.6m there for their five wins and one draw. Tottenham then raked in £9.5m for qualifying automatically for the Round of 16. The Lilywhites also won £9.6m for finishing fourth in the League Phase.

UEFA also hand out extra money under something called the ‘value pillar system’, which depends on coefficient ranking and the market pool. Spurs earned another estimated £26.8m here.

As a result, Spurs raked in £71.6m from the Champions League in total this season, but they have also missed out on a further boost.

It is explained that teams that qualify for the final eight will be handed a further £10.8m, which has gone to Atletico over Spurs after the La Liga side emerged 7-5 winners on aggregate.

Reports indicate that Tottenham are plotting an ambitious rebuild of their squad if they stay in the Premier League this season.

However, Spurs are set to miss out on all European football next season and the additional matchday and TV revenue, as well as the prize money that entails, which may limit how much they can invest in the squad.

Attracting the most elite players may also become harder without the allure of European football.
