Team news

Liverpool: Liverpool will be without five players for the game, after Wataru Endo was added to the Reds' injury list during the win at Sunderland. Liverpool is still waiting to discover the full extent of the issue but the injury is believed to be serious.

The Reds remain without long-term absentees Alexander Isak, Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley, although Isak's return may not be far away after he started doing some work with the ball this week.

Jeremie Frimpong is still out too – Frimpong's injury is not as bad as Liverpool first feared when he was forced off during the Champions League win over Qarabag last month, but the Brighton game will be the fourth in a row that he has missed.

Brighton: Brighton will be without four players against Liverpool, but the club has been boosted by the return to fitness of Mats Wieffer.

The Seagulls remain without long-term absentees Solly March, Stefanos Tzimas and Adam Webster, while Yasin Ayari is not yet ready to return to action.

What the managers said

Arne Slot suggesting he won't play an inexperienced team despite it being a cup game: "We play a very strong team with Brighton and getting the right balance with who to play is something to think about. Of course it gives us more questions [that it is Brighton]. If we had a different opponent, then I maybe make other choices."

Fabian Hurzeler on the need to win amid Brighton's poor form: "We all know this game is a game of results. We need a result and I think the club and supporters are waiting for this one result. We are all fighting for this and are convinced if we keep having the performances like we did at Aston Villa we will get the results we all need and we all deserve."
