'I’d rather have Alexander Isak over anyone - Liverpool’s new No. 9 is best in the world'

Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has claimed the Reds have signed the best striker in world soccer and says he would rather have Alexander Isak on his side than Harry Kane or Erling Haaland.

It’s a bold statement, particularly after the England captain moved up to 74 international goals on Wednesday, while Haaland has been prolific since his move to the Premier League in 2022, netting 88 top-flight goals in 100 appearances.

But Pennant feels that Isak, who joined Liverpool for a record-breaking £125 million ($169M) on transfer deadline day, will thrive at Anfield once he regains full fitness.

Asked if Kane would be the league’s best striker if he were to return from Bayern Munich, Pennant replied: “No, I would say Isak.

“Just because over the years, Harry Kane’s numbers in the Premier League have been fantastic, golden boots galore. But Harry Kane now, right at this minute, is not a better player than Alexander Isak.

“He’s not better than Haaland either,” added the ex-Liverpool winger, speaking on talkSPORT. “Isak is the best No. 9 in the world. When he’s fit, give him some games, give him some time.”

Isak underlined his quality when he came off the bench in Sweden’s defeat at the hands of Kosovo on Monday. Despite only playing the final 18 minutes, the former Newcastle United man managed four shots, more than anyone else on the pitch.

Speaking after the match to Swedish media, Isak said he does not want to reflect on his acrimonious exit from St. James’ Park.

“It’s clear that not everyone has the whole picture, but that’s something for another day,” said the 25-year-old.

“That’s part of football. I can’t control everything that is said or written. But I’m glad I became a Liverpool player. That’s what I wanted, and I’m happy about that.

“There is a lot to discuss, and it can be discussed for a long time. It has been educational, and I’m happy with the final result.

“I’m happy and proud to be a Liverpool player. I don’t want to go into details or talk about that situation too much. It is a closed chapter, but I have never had any problems.”

Isak is unlikely to be fit enough to start in Liverpool’s upcoming game against Burnley on Sunday, but should be able to make a cameo off the bench.
