Former Premier League player Shaun Wright-Phillips has suggested Ben White could move to Chelsea if he continues to struggle for game time at Arsenal
Former Premier League winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has shed light on why he thinks Arsenal defender Ben White could be a potential transfer target for Chelsea. Despite only making six appearances this season, with the majority of his time spent on the bench, White's talent hasn't gone unnoticed.
Indeed, the defender hasn't played in the Premier League since the season's inaugural match. An early-season injury saw White sidelined for two Premier League matches.
He's been an unused substitute in each of Arsenal's last nine top-flight games, with Mikel Arteta often favouring Jurrien Timber at right-back.
White's limited game time in the Premier League has sparked rumours of a potential move away from the Emirates Stadium.
Wright-Phillips has now outlined why Chelsea could be the perfect fit for White if his stint on the Arsenal bench continues.
"I could see a move for Ben White to Chelsea take place next summer," Wright-Phillips revealed in a chat with Best Betting Sites. "It makes sense, it's possible.
"I feel quite sorry for Ben because he had an injury, and he was playing so well for Arsenal. He was unbelievable.
"Then he came back and he'd lost his place to Jurrien Timber, who's the best right-back in the Premier League.
"It's going to take something special to unseat him now. I don't think Arsenal would be willing to sell him in the winter window though, because that squad depth is one of Arsenal's biggest advantages.
"If Timber is injured, White is the man to come in.
"So selling him would force Arsenal back in the market and I don't think that's something they would want to do while they are challenging for the title, and maybe the Champions League."
White was not included in the starting line-up for Arsenal's Champions League match against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
The next chance for White to start for the Gunners will be when they travel to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon in a top-of-the-table clash in the capital.
