Cast your mind back to October 23, 2011 - Manchester City fans were in a jubilant mood as they left Old Trafford, having thrashed Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby.

It felt like a real turning point for both clubs and the city of Manchester - with the final result one of the worst of Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure at the club. United legend, Wayne Rooney, was on the pitch that day and has lifted the lid on the aftermath of a dismal result.

Speaking on the Wayne Rooney Show, the former United star said: "I think that was a big moment for City back then - because you could feel City coming up and getting closer to us. But to come to Old Trafford and win 6-1, I think that was a statement.

"I remember being on the pitch and it was horrible. It was like the second half just felt like it was goal after goal, and you're just like; 'Oh, get me off this pitch'."

A brace from Mario Ballotelli gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at the hour-mark, celebrating by revealing the infamous 'Why always me?' t-shirt, with Sergio Arguero adding a third in the 69th minute. Darren Fletcher would reduce the deficit in the 81st minute, before an Edin Dzeko brace and David Silva goal in extra-time made the result even more embarrassing.

"After something like that I'd usually just go home. But I had a birthday party. Joe Hart, Gareth Barry and a few of the City players were invited to my birthday party," Rooney said.

"You've got family, friends, everyone who's made their own plans to come. I was like; 'I can't cancel it' so I went.

"We've got the United lads, and some of the City lads sat there. I think it was me, Crouchy [Peter Crouch], Harty [Joe Hart] - we all got up and did a song of Backstreet Boys. Looking back, I should have cancelled, but it was the friends and family who'd all booked the time off and got the babysitters and stuff."

Months before, Rooney had been the star of the show, scoring that iconic overhead kick to give United a late 2-1 win in February 2011, winning the Premier League Goal of the season award in 2011.

"I was so bad in that game. It's one of the worst games I've ever played. I couldn't control a ball," Rooney added.

"I think it's more of an iconic goal because it's in the derby, you score and win the game 2-1. But you don't practise overhead kicks."
