'I played with Steven Gerrard - I know his stance on becoming Liverpool manager'

Dietmar Hamann insists Steven Gerrard won't turn down the chance to become Liverpool's interim manager if Arne Slot is fired.

The Reds are enduring a difficult season under Slot, who guided the Merseyside club to the Premier League title last term. Liverpool is seventh in the Premier League table, 10 points behind Arsenal in first, and ninth in the Champions League standings.

Former Feyenoord boss Slot has eased some of the pressure on him by beating Inter Milan and Brighton over the last week. Yet he's not out of the woods just yet and will need to continue picking up results if he's to remain in charge of Liverpool for years to come.

If Slot fails to do that, there's speculation that Gerrard could replace him at Anfield on a temporary basis. Gerrard is regarded as one of the club's greatest ever players and is currently out of work after leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq at the start of 2025.

Hamann played alongside Gerrard at Liverpool and won the Champions League together in 2005. The German believes Gerrard wouldn't turn down the chance to become Liverpool's manager.

"Steven Gerrard loves Liverpool," Hamann told JeffBet. "If he's asked to fill in as an interim manager, there is every chance he'd do it.

"We know how much he's loved by the fans. If the situation ever arose where Liverpool needs a manager for a few months, Stevie won't turn it down."

Despite viewing Gerrard as an ideal candidate for the job, he thinks Slot will remain as Liverpool's manager. Hamann added: "I feel things are slowly coming together at Liverpool, so I don't think it will happen, but I'm pretty sure he'd (Gerrard) take the opportunity if it comes.

"It could absolutely boost his management career, and there aren't many better places to get in the spotlight than Liverpool. It would be a fantastic opportunity for Gerrard to help manage his hometown club. I don't think he can turn it down."

While Hamann can see Gerrard becoming Liverpool's manager one day, he doesn't think Jurgen Klopp, who coached the team between 2015 and 2024, will make an emotional return to Anfield.

Klopp won countless trophies at Anfield, including the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020.

"I think Jurgen Klopp is happy at Red Bull," Hamann continued. "There have been changes at some of the clubs they own.

"But, I think it would be a wonderful story if Klopp returned to Liverpool. I can't even comprehend what the reaction would be if he stepped onto the training ground or back into Anfield if he were the manager again.

"I don't think Klopp managing Liverpool will happen again."
