'I used to captain Liverpool - I know which player can fill Mohamed Salah void'

Liverpool has been told that Dominik Szoboszlai could fill the void if Mohamed Salah were to leave the club in January.

Salah's future on Merseyside looks as uncertain as it ever has following his incendiary remarks in the Elland Road mixed zone on Saturday, when he accused the club of throwing him under the bus and also claimed he no longer had a relationship with head coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool's reaction to Salah's remarks was to drop him from the squad for the Champions League trip to Inter Milan, and that decision was vindicated as the Reds registered a 1-0 win courtesy of Dominik Szoboszlai's late penalty. Liverpool only has one more game before Salah leaves for the Africa Cup of Nations next week, with Brighton visiting Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.

At the moment it seems unlikely that Salah will play in that game, and by the time he returns from Afcon, the January transfer window will be upon us.

Amid the prospect of Salah leaving Liverpool next month – with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League potentially on the cards – former Liverpool captain Paul Ince believes that the club already has a player in the squad capable of replacing Salah.

“You’d like to think that Liverpool have a player within their ranks who could replace Mohamed Salah if he leaves in January,” Ince told Covers.com.

“If you look at what Arne Slot is doing with his team at the moment, Dominik Szoboszlai has been playing all over the place – he’s been put at right-back, in midfield, then on the right wing last night against Inter Milan. He’s the talisman of this Liverpool team at the moment.

“Szoboszlai would have been under huge pressure to step up to take that penalty last night and he’s put Liverpool in a good position to finish in the top eight of the Champions League table.

"It was a massive win for the club and should give them confidence going into the Christmas schedule.

“He is a fantastic player, and he’s been utilised in all these positions – he just gets on with it, takes responsibility, and doesn’t moan.

"He’s been outstanding for Liverpool this season. There’s a long way to go in the campaign, but his performances have been excellent so far.”
