The Liverpool defender has conducted an interview during the international break in which he discussed the club's plans for the future — Konate's contract, of course, expires this summer

Ibrahima Konate has said Liverpool will win trophies once again in the future, providing perhaps the biggest indication yet that he will remain at Anfield beyond the summer.

The defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, and despite months of negotiations, there has been no breakthrough between the player and club. However, reports linking Konate with a summer departure have also gone quiet, and a shifting narrative in recent weeks suggests he could yet stay at Liverpool.

That will only be strengthened following his comments in a recent ESPN interview, in which Konate reflected on the Reds’ regression this season and, when discussing the future, repeatedly referred to himself and the club as “we,” adding that players and staff will work together to bring success back to the club.

“You know, we can say many things because we were champions last season,” Konate said. “People are going to talk about: Okay, we bring new players. Many things happen, like we lost a player when we started the season.

“Many things happened for us this season. But what people have to understand — this is my point — before we won the league last season, we just built a team to win the Premier League in one moment.

“And this is part of the success. This is the way to the success. And now we bring new players, of course, they will not perform straight from the first game.

“We just have to be relaxed because this is part of the success. We bring new players. We will adapt,” he continued.

“We will try to work and understand each other altogether. And at a point in time, we will win a trophy. We will have success.

“And when we win the league or the Champions League, people will forget every bad season we have because now we won the league last season. But if I remember well, two years before, we play in the Europa League, but people don't talk about this anymore.

“This is just part of the success, and we have to be relaxed because we have just amazing fans.

"We have to stay together, and the success will come for sure. Maybe this season, or maybe in the future, for sure."

Konate’s comments certainly don’t read like a man ready to call time on his Anfield career, and, one way or the other, an update will emerge on his future soon.

It was in April and early May last year that the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold were announced.

Konate, who has endured a mixed season for Liverpool, has established himself as the firm first-choice center-back alongside Van Dijk, and has played 41 this term.
