Is Igor Thiago fit to start for Brentford vs Tottenham? Injury news latest and FPL update

Brentford take on Tottenham in the Premier League this Thursday with Igor Thiago potentially set to miss out as his minutes are managed

Igor Thiago is a slight injury doubt for gameweek 19 when Brentford face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on New Year's Day. The Bees striker has been in impressive form this season with 11 goals to his name, but he has not found the back of the net in his last five matches.

In last weekend's 4-1 victory over Bournemouth, Thiago grabbed an assist, but it was Kevin Schade who stole the show with a sensational hat-trick.

Those points would have come as a nice boost to the 27 per cent of Fantasy Premier League managers that own him. However, he could now miss Brentford's next game after Keith Andrews' concerning injury comments in his pre-match press conference.

With that being said, football.london has taken a look at the latest updates on Thiago's potential issue before Brentford host Spurs.

What has been said about Thiago's injury

On Tuesday afternoon, Andrews gave a detailed update on Thiago's condition before his side face Tottenham in 48 hours.

“Thiago had a bit of an issue, but nothing to do with his injury last season at all,” he said. "This time of year takes its toll, and we need to be careful with some players at times.

“He showed a lot of bravery and courage to play against Wolves and gave us that platform. He played really, really well against Wolves and gave us that base to win the game.

"Players fed off him: Keane Lewis-Potter with his goals and Kev [Schade] was looking dangerous that day.

“There’s nothing too much to worry about. He’s shown a lot of courage and put the team before himself going into the last couple of games.”

Andrews referenced his battling display against Wolves despite not being fit having issued an update on his and Jordan Henderson's condition before that win.

"We don't know yet how they are," he said . "They've been with the medics today and we'll see how they are for the game on Saturday."

He went on to play the full 90 minutes at Molineux.

Will Thiago be fit to face Tottenham in game-week 19?

Thiago has already been dealing with a minor knock this season and that forced him to be omitted from the starting XI against Arsenal earlier this month.

That same scenario could play out again with Thiago on the bench and only introduced if Brentford require him. Alternatively, he could start the Spurs game and have his minutes managed through by being subbed off early or not being included from the off this weekend against Everton.

With four fixtures to come for most teams over the next two weeks, it seems very likely Thiago will not start all four. He could start the next three before then being left out against Sunderland in January.
