It feels inevitable that Tottenham will return to a former manager this summer - Opinion

Thomas Frank will not last the season if Tottenham Hotspur continue to deteriorate, and it seems the club’s next manager could already be perfectly lined up to take charge in the summer.

Thomas Frank is little more than six months into a three-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur, but things have already turned sideways for the struggling head coach.

Spurs have been on a downward spiral since October and now find themselves well into the bottom half of the Premier League table.

There will be too much pressure from the supporters for Frank to keep his job after the summer if Tottenham’s pattern of results does not change. This could work out perfectly because there is one potential replacement who will be in the perfect position to take over.

Mauricio Pochettino could make a sensational return to Tottenham

Although Mauricio Pochettino is currently preparing to lead the USA at the 2026 World Cup, his contract expires after the conclusion of the tournament.

This means he would be available to manage a club again and what better destination is there for him than the place where he made a name for himself on the biggest stage in Europe?

The Argentine made a mistake by becoming the manager of Chelsea in 2023 and that spell did not go according to plan. However, he could reclaim his hero status in North London and complete a return to Spurs which will delight the club’s fanbase.

Spurs could place an interim in charge ahead of reappointing Pochettino

If Frank does depart Tottenham before the end of the season, it might not be the wisest idea to make another permanent appointment so soon.

Spurs could place a caretaker manager in charge until Pochettino becomes available. Ryan Mason usually fulfils this role and he has recently been sacked by West Brom, but someone like Harry Redknapp would be a better option. He knows the club well and has a wealth of managerial experience.

If Pochettino does come back to Tottenham, he will have to oversee a squad rebuild and adjust to the fact that his best players during his previous spell are all gone. However, maybe his return would open the door to the re-signing of Harry Kane. Either way, this scenario would be something which causes excitement.
