James Maddison has shared fresh updates on his recovery from injury — and made it clear he is desperate to get back on the pitch for Tottenham Hotspur.
The England international is currently sidelined with an ACL injury he sustained in the summer. Maddison is expected to miss most of the season as a result.
The 28-year-old was in attendance on Tuesday night as Spurs began their latest Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win over Villarreal, continuing what has been an impressive start to life under new manager Thomas Frank.
On Instagram, Maddison sent a message backing his teammates and expressing his own desire to return soon.
“Missing it so much,” he said. “Long, long way to go but I cannot wait to be back out there in that Spurs shirt, man.”
He also shared footage of his rehabilitation in his Instagram story. The midfielder could be seen taking part in light movement drills, while another post showed him alongside Dejan Kulusevski on an exercise bike.
Despite his absence, Maddison remains invested in Tottenham’s fortunes. Last weekend, he criticised a VAR decision that ruled out Cristian Romero’s goal against West Ham United for an apparent foul.
The strongly worded message — in which he said referees have “had a shocker” this season — could yet lead to FA action against him.
While Spurs have started the new season well, Maddison will be a significant miss for Frank. The playmaker scored 12 goals and registered 11 assists in all competitions last season, helping Tottenham lift the UEFA Europa League.
