James McConnell already justifying Ajax chief's praise after Liverpool exit

2 hours ago 2

James McConnell made his debut for Ajax during the Eredivisie side's 3-1 win against PEC Zwolle.

The midfielder played 23 minutes for John Heitinga's side on his 21st birthday. McConnell made the most of his brief debut cameo for Ajax, posting tidy numbers that reflected both composure and determination.

The Liverpool academy graduate won every challenge he committed to, recording a perfect success rate in both tackles (1/1) and ground duels (1/1), while also completing six of his seven passes.

His willingness to get involved so quickly was a positive sign on a night when his main task was to settle into the rhythm of Ajax’s midfield.

Beyond his work in possession, McConnell also contributed defensively, registering a recovery and a clearance to help ease pressure in the closing stages.

Though his appearance was short, the figures highlight a disciplined and efficient performance — the kind of introduction that offers encouragement to coaches and supporters alike.

McConnell signed a new contract with Liverpool before moving on loan to the Dutch powerhouse. The highly rated youngster will spend the remainder of the 2025–26 season in Amsterdam, where he was reunited with the former Liverpool coach.

Heitinga, who left Liverpool during the offseason to take charge at Ajax, has already welcomed another Reds player this summer, with goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros joining the Dutch club on a season-long loan a few weeks earlier.

Ajax technical director Alex Kroes said: "James has a real winner’s mentality and will bring the necessary extra power to the squad. "With him, we are adding a player who, as a defensive holding midfielder, can contribute valuable qualities to the team.

James McConnell impressed during his debut for Ajax

"He has been part of Liverpool’s first-team set-up for several seasons and therefore knows exactly what is required at the very highest level. He has great potential and will be given the opportunity here to continue his development. We are very pleased that he has chosen Ajax."

McConnell was brought in as an additional option in midfield. He featured in Liverpool’s senior squad four times last season, but opportunities would likely have been limited again this campaign, despite the highly rated ex-Sunderland academy graduate’s evident potential.

"I like him a lot. He impressed me," Arne Slot said after he played against PSV in the Champions League earlier this calendar year.

"If I was surprised, it would mean in training sessions he wouldn’t be able to play at this level, and that’s not true because he is competitive with the ones we have.

"So I’m not surprised, but you always wonder how they will react on this stage, at this level. We saw the same with Amara Nallo, but he does not have the same impact in training sessions as McConnell. The way James plays is not a surprise, but he definitely deserves credit for his performance today."
