Jamie Carragher has defended his criticism of Mohamed Salah after being accused of throwing "unnecessary jibes" at the forward.
Salah created a media storm on Saturday by accusing Liverpool of throwing him "under the bus" and claiming that he has no relationship with Arne Slot. The 33-year-old's comments came after he was benched by the Reds manager for consecutive games.
Salah offered his thoughts to reporters in the mixed zone after Liverpool's 3-3 draw at Leeds. The player also named Carragher during his comments, and the ex-defender responded to his fellow Anfield icon during Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
Carragher described Salah's outburst as a "disgrace" before questioning his pre-Liverpool career and lack of success with Egypt. The 47-year-old's criticism of Salah was strong, claiming the player has "tried to throw the club under the bus twice in the last 12 months."
Carragher's criticism of Salah lasted for around eight minutes and could be perceived as a rant. Sports presenter Hugh Woozencroft, who has worked for the likes of talkSPORT and ITV Sport, listened to Carragher's comments on Sky Sports and offered his opinion.
"Agreed with a lot of this, but there were some unnecessary jibes," claimed Woozencroft on X on Tuesday.
"Mentioning how much he's been paid, and how he was seen before he got to Liverpool - as if HE should be grateful. He earned his money without question, and Liverpool hadn't won a league title for almost three decades."
Carragher spotted Woozencroft's post and replied. The Liverpool icon wrote: "They weren’t jibes, you and others have completely missed the point, which was no matter how good you are, we all need help from the club, players, and fans to be successful.
"He’s been amazing for LFC, LFC have been amazing for him. Which I was just reminding him."
Fans were eagerly awaiting Carragher's response to Salah after the player said on Saturday: "Tomorrow Carragher is going to go for me again and again, and that’s fine."
Carragher resisted reacting to Salah's comments on social media and waited until Monday Night Football to make his feelings clear. The former England star believes Salah's comments were "choreographed with him and his agent to cause maximum damage."
Slot responded to Salah's comments by dropping the player from his matchday squad to face Inter Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.
"I think the club have made the right decision in terms of him not going abroad," Carragher continued.
"Whether he will play for Liverpool again, I don't know. I hope he does, because he's one of the greatest players we've ever had, but if you continue like that and statements like that, if he doesn't play, as I've said, who knows."
