Many Liverpool fans are hoping the Reds make additions to the squad next month, and while Carragher feels that is possible, he does not think there will be a direct replacement for Alexander Isak

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool is unlikely to sign a center forward in January to cover for the absence of Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker sustained a serious injury while scoring in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and appeared to be in serious discomfort as he was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong.

Arne Slot is expected to give an update in Tuesday’s press conference, with Isak likely to spend a prolonged period on the sidelines. That could leave Liverpool lacking resources in attack, particularly in the No. 9 role, with Hugo Ekitike the only viable senior option.

However, Carragher feels additions in the wide areas are more likely than up front, with the Reds keen on Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.

“I think it’s pretty certain now that Mo Salah will stay when he comes back from AFCON,” opined Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. “We wanted that to happen; we mentioned that last week.

“I think Harvey Elliott’s situation at Aston Villa will mean he will probably come back to the club because he’s finding it difficult at Aston Villa.

“There have been reports for a long time that Liverpool are really interested in Semenyo.

“I think the fact he’s a wide player who can play both sides… and your two wide players predominantly are Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo, who can both play center forward, I think probably Liverpool would go more that way that buy a center forward or maybe buy someone they don’t really like.

“They seem to really like Semeno, as a lot of other clubs do as well,” Carragher continued. “I go back to what Liverpool did a few years ago when they had a lot of centre-backs out: Virgil van Dijk, [Joel] Matip, Joe Gomez.

“They brought in a lad from Preston [Ben Davies] and a player called [Ozan] Kabak, who came from outside the Premier League.

“They were never going to be Liverpool players for the future; it was to get them through to the end of the season.

“Liverpool may find a center forward who can do that but I don’t think they will look to spend big money on someone they don’t really fancy.”

Semenyo has been linked with the majority of the Premier League’s top clubs, and reports have indicated he could have a £65 million ($87M) buyout clause in the contract he signed last summer.

The Guardian claimed the Reds hold the advantage over rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Spurs, with Anfield Semenyo’s preferred destination.
