Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was left incensed upon learning of the Reds' potential Champions League round of 16 adversaries, lambasting the new format in the process. This followed Arne Slot's team securing their spot in the top eight of the league phase with a commanding 6-0 victory over Qarabag.
An Alexis Mac Allister double was complemented by strikes from Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike, and Federico Chiesa, completing a comprehensive thrashing at Anfield. This ensured Liverpool maintained control of their destiny in the competition, avoiding the uncertainty of slipping in and out of positions that guaranteed progression to the round of 16.
Ultimately, Slot's squad concluded the league phase in third position, trailing only Arsenal and Bayern Munich, amassing 18 points from their eight fixtures.

On this occasion, whilst it appears it may not prove as challenging as confronting potential European champions, it won't be straightforward for Liverpool either, reports the Liverpool Echo.
They will meet one of Galatasaray, Club Brugge, Atletico Madrid, or Juventus in the round of 16, with the former pair and latter duo set to clash.
Friday's draw will reveal which half of the bracket Liverpool find themselves in, whittling down their potential opponents from four to merely two.
Upon learning this, Carragher was visibly furious with the format, tossing his pen aside and questioning how his former club could finish third yet face such challenging opposition.

Speaking on CBS Sports, he said: "I've just seen who Liverpool's potential opponents are... honest to god. This new format, I've had enough of it [throws pen].
"We finished top last year and we got Paris Saint-Germain, we finish third this year and get, listen to this, Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, or Juventus... and we finished third."
Micah Richards seemed to wind Carragher up further when he remarked: "But, you're the mighty Liverpool.
"I know, but what you're saying is," Carragher responded. "If you're finishing third, you can't have them, you can't have Atletico Madrid in there. Juventus."
The ex-defender then suggested that rivals Manchester City typically enjoy favourable draws, claiming they get "lucky" in cup competitions, though this was quickly debunked when it emerged they would meet one of Benfica, Bodo/Glimt, Inter Milan, or Real Madrid.
Carragher swiftly softened his stance on the format, chuckling and declaring: "I'll take that."
Nevertheless, it doesn't negate concerns about the format, particularly given how demanding Liverpool's eventual draw could prove when everything is confirmed on Friday.
