Jamie Carragher has criticized Hannibal Mejri for a "moment of madness" which gifted Liverpool three points against Burnley.
A stoppage-time penalty from Mohamed Salah ensured Liverpool preserved its perfect start to the Premier League season, after Arne Slot’s men struggled to break down a stubborn Burnley at Turf Moor, even after Scott Parker's side was reduced to 10 men in the second half.
The first half offered little in terms of quality or clear chances for either side. Alexis Mac Allister failed to reappear after the interval, while Milos Kerkez had already been withdrawn before the break, yet those changes did little to shift the rhythm of the game.
Much like the clash with Arsenal, it was always going to take a flash of brilliance or a costly mistake to separate the teams. Ultimately, it was the latter, as Hannibal conceded a decisive spot-kick with his arm outstretched.
Speaking on co-commentary, Carragher said: "Two games running, Burnley has suffered from a moment of madness. It happened in the closing stages at United too with the shirt pull.
"What is Hannibal doing? It is braindead. For the effort Burnley has put in, to nullify Liverpool, to do then do that with a minute to go, you just cannot comprehend it."
Fellow Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane also showed no sympathy for the ex-Manchester United man. "Liverpool lacked quality, their final pass was so off today – but we were sitting there thinking they would get one more chance," said Keane.
"And with Burnley, there's a bit of madness at the end just like at Old Trafford. When you come up, you have got to give yourself a bit of a chance.
"It's not as if Hannibal's unlucky. It's madness, it's cost them a point. And a point would have felt like a win. So it does knock them. Liverpool stuck at it, you have to keep going until the end. That's what the top teams do."
The Burnley boss expressed sympathy for Hannibal, praising his side.” "I have been in the arena, I know how quick things move," said Parker.
"His body action was turning and his arm has gone out. The ball is probably coming at 80mph and it has hit it. The only learning for Hannibal is that we will have to train with hands behind the back.
'I've seen disappointments in my time and my career. At times we survived like our life depended on it today. We knew we had to give that.
'The overriding factor here is that everything we set about to be today I am immensely proud of the players. The game ends in a real heartbreaking way for us. It is what it is.
'We just fell a little bit short with the last-minute penalty.'
