Jamie Carragher does not expect Mohamed Salah to be at Liverpool next season – but is glad that the Egyptian's Reds career did not end with his controversial comments at Elland Road earlier this month.
The chances of Salah leaving in January seem far lower than they did a week ago, after he returned to the fold as a substitute during Liverpool's win over Brighton on Saturday.
Seven days earlier, it seemed as though Salah might have played his last game for Liverpool after stopping for an ill-advised chat with journalists after he was an unused substitute in a 3-3 draw with Leeds.
However, after being left out of the traveling squad for the midweek win over Inter Milan in the Champions League, Salah was back in the squad against Brighton.
Salah was serenaded by Liverpool's supporters following the 2-0 win over the Seagulls, and he stayed out on the field for longer than any of his teammates as he applauded the thousands of supporters who had stayed behind at Anfield to sing his name.
Carragher said on Sky Sports that it was a nice moment for Salah, but added that it was not a grand enough farewell for a player of his caliber.
"It was nicer than what we saw at Elland Road," Carragher said of the scenes after the final whistle against Brighton. "But does Mo Salah deserve more than that as a Liverpool player?
"He deserves a guard of honor, he deserves a mosaic in the Kop, he deserves to be able to bring his family, his wife and his kids on the pitch and actually be celebrated for what he's done as a Liverpool player."
Carragher called on Salah to keep his focus on on-field matters for the remainder of the season, before potentially finishing his Liverpool career off in style in 2026.
Carragher said: "Just put your differences with the manager to the side and just think, 'three or four more months at Liverpool. Ok, the worst thing that's going to happen is, OK i get this big send-off; the best thing that could happen is, I'm walking out with my teammates in Budapest in the Champions League final.'
"And if he'd have sat in Saudi Arabia, watching his Liverpool teammates do that, I think he'd really regret it."
