Jamie Carragher humiliated while attempting to take high road with Mohamed Salah

Jamie Carragher found himself being caught out during his response to Mohamed Salah as the former Liverpool defender had to quickly backtrack on some of his recent comments.

Carragher was given his right to reply to Salah after being called out during the winger’s outburst against Liverpool and Arne Slot at the weekend. The 33-year-old claimed the former defender would “go after me again and again” after accusing the club of “throwing him under the bus”.

Salah was subsequently slammed by Carragher during the pundit’s appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, with the Reds legend branding the tirade a “disgrace” in a long and passionate response.

Carragher though was caught out at one point as the subject of his previous spats with Salah was brought up. The pair have clashed on a few occasions in the past, something which host Dave Jones seemed to refer to during Carragher’s summary.

“You will be aware Jamie, I’m sure as well, that there will be those listening you to speak passionately there that say that Jamie Carragher was always going to attack Mo Salah or criticize Mo Salah tonight. Mo Salah said it himself didn’t he after game?” Jones said.

Carragher responded: “Have I ever criticized Mo Salah on the pitch?”

To which Jones quickly replied: “Well, a couple of weeks ago, you said his legs had gone.”

Carragher appeared to be taken aback by Jones’ response as he began to say: “No, I don’t class that as…” before changing tack and saying: “That’s something that happens to every player. That’s not a criticism of him as a player.”

Doubts now hang over whether Salah may have already played his final game for Liverpool. The Egyptian suggested he would make his final appearance against Brighton this weekend ahead of departing for the Africa Cup of Nations.

But he has subsequently been dropped from the Reds’ squad for their Champions League game against Inter Milan on Tuesday, despite training with the rest of his teammates at the AXA Training Centre on Monday.

Slot has also responded to Salah’s comments, and admitted to being taken aback by the suggestion that their relationship had broken down.

"That's not the way I feel but he has the right to feel how he feels things,” Slot said. “I haven't felt that at all - until Saturday evening, for sure.

"When I didn't play him, usually players don't like the manager that much but he was very respectful to my staff, to his teammates and he trained really hard.

"So, to an extent, it was a surprise to me when I heard after the game that he gave the comments that he gave.”
