Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have disagreed over Mohamed Salah's departure from Liverpool.

The forward revealed via social media on Tuesday that he'll be leaving Anfield this summer. The announcement has sparked considerable discussion among pundits, with both Carragher and Neville offering their perspectives. But when analysing the circumstances, it appears the pair held differing views.

Salah's departure follows his signing of a fresh two-year deal at the club 12 months ago. That second season has now been canceled, allowing the Egyptian to depart on a free transfer at the end of the campaign. The decision to exit 12 months earlier than anticipated has become a point of contention.

During an appearance on the Overlap, Carragher remarked: "Why are you saying that you're shocked or they've ripped each other's contract? It's a great deal for everybody; it works for everyone."

Neville countered: "I get that, I'm not saying it's not sweet for everyone that Liverpool can spend the money elsewhere on different players next season, that Mo Salah can change his career.

"I just feel that Mo Salah, I would have thought that him, wanting the two-year deal, I would have expected him to say, 'No, I'm going to hang in there' — probably.

"He must think it's gone really badly, is what I'm saying. I'm not saying he shouldn't have done it. He must have got to a really low point in his mind to think 'I've got to get out of here,' this is a place he loves, by the way."

Growing increasingly animated, Carragher then responded: "Not get out of here like, 'Liverpool I've got to get out of here, it's not the same for me, it's not my team.' Stop talking about Liverpool, it's Liverpool's big problems, it's about Salah."

Neville replied: "I'm not saying he's wrong, my point is for him to go from being so desperate to stay at Liverpool, wanting a two-year deal, loving the city and the club like he does, and the fans, to get to a point where by he thinks, 'I've got to get out of here and leave this club now.' That is a massive shift."

Carragher fired back: "Because he's not playing! Is it the same players? The team built around him.

"Is he going to play less next season? Of course he is, it's obvious to see, it's not that difficult.

"Mo Salah, it's not just about the money for him, he's like 'I want to play every single week, every single minute'. You can see the way the team is shaping, Liverpool need different players in the wide areas next season, that's what Liverpool need to buy."

Salah's departure concludes a nine-year spell at Anfield; during that period, he has featured 435 times, netting 255 goals and registering an additional 122 assists. The 33-year-old will aim to enhance those statistics between now and the conclusion of the current campaign.

Seven Premier League fixtures of the season remain. Liverpool also continues its pursuit in both the FA Cup and the Champions League at the quarterfinal stages.
