Arsenal are six points clear at the top of the Premier League and are overwhelming favourites to win the title, but Jamie Carragher believes they could be their own worst enemies

Jamie Carragher has suggested Arsenal are the only side capable of derailing their own Premier League title bid, with the Gunners currently clear favourites to lift the trophy in May.

Mikel Arteta's team extended their lead at the summit to six points following Sunday's emphatic 4-1 victory over North London rivals Tottenham at Emirates Stadium. With Manchester City suffering defeat at Newcastle, Arsenal find themselves in a commanding position as the hectic Christmas schedule approaches.

However, former Liverpool defender Carragher believes the primary threat to Arsenal's title aspirations comes from within. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: "The only team that can stop Arsenal winning the league is Arsenal; they are the best team. They are the best squad.

"The only thing that can stop them is their own heads, their own mentality. Maybe this crowd getting nervous in March and April, if the league is still up for grabs by then.

"This would be the one. If they didn't win it, I think we'd all point the finger at them and say, 'You threw this away'. I don't think that's ever been the case before.

"I always think the case has been that there has been a team slightly better than them in the Premier League, but that is definitely not the case this season."

The Gunners have experienced this scenario previously, having mounted title challenges in each of the past three seasons without success. Arteta remains cautious about getting carried away at this stage, especially with so much football remaining to be played.

When asked what sitting six points clear at this point of the campaign means, he responded: "In this league? Not much. We are doing really well. We've been really consistent and that's it.

"I mean, when you look at the results, whether they win or lose, the difference in the scoreline and actually what happens in games is really small."

Arsenal will be looking to maintain their title charge against one of their closest challengers next weekend. The north London outfit face second-placed Chelsea in their next league fixture, with victory sufficient to extend their advantage to nine points.
