Mohamed Salah continues to break records at Liverpool, as the 33-year-old became the record appearance holder for the club in the top European competition after starting in the side that took on Galatasaray on Tuesday evening in the Champions League.
It was the Egyptian's 81st appearance in the competition for the Reds, overtaking Jamie Carragher, who previously held the record with 80 appearances. The former defender hasn't always seen eye-to-eye with Salah in the past, but he seemingly showed his approval of the record-breaking moment on social media.
Carragher reacted by taking to X to repost the fact that his record had been taken by the current Liverpool star, seemingly responding to the fact that he no longer holds it. It adds Salah to the history books once again, as the forward continues to write out his Liverpool story, despite the uncertainty of how many chapters may be left in it.
Salah signed a new contract last summer, committing another two years to Liverpool, but there was uncertainty over his future just a few months later. The legendary winger was dropped by Arne Slot in late November and early December, and after a poor run of results, there was an outburst to the media.
In an interview, Salah suggested he could leave Anfield in January, claiming that the club had thrown him under the bus during their poor run of form. It brewed tensions at a time when Liverpool were struggling, as questions remained over his future at the club.
That interview led to frustrations from Carragher, where he publicly slammed the comments made by the forward towards Liverpool. The former defender brandished Salah a "disgrace" for the comments, creating yet another public back and forth between the two.
That isn't the first public clash between the pair, but the response from Carragher to the broken record shows the respect he still has, regardless of the previous encounter. In the end, that possibility of an exit for Salah never came in the January transfer window, with a quick return to the starting lineup coming after his Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Egypt, but uncertainty remains over his long-term future.
Links have persisted over Salah and a transfer in the summer, with the Saudi Pro League touted as a possible destination. However, until that possibility, the winger will be looking to finish the season strongly with Liverpool, with the possibility of breaking more records and extending his lead in some others.
Salah's 81st appearance in the Champions League sets that record ahead of Carragher, with a chance to extend that to at least 82 against Galatasaray in the second leg at Anfield next week. If the Reds get beyond that leg, then it can be extended further, up to 87 if Liverpool reach the final.
In his previous 80 appearances, Salah scored 46 goals and assisted 19 for his teammates, having sustained a period of dominance in Europe at the top of his game. He played a large part in the 2018/19 season that saw the Reds lift the trophy under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp.
As for Carragher, his record was 80 appearances in the Champions League with no goals scored and two goals assisted in that time. That did end with a famous triumph in 2004/05 with Liverpool, as they completed the famous comeback win in Istanbul to beat AC Milan.
Where that incredible night became a highlight of Carragher's career, it was also the place where his appearance record came to an end.
