Jamie Carragher's Arsenal theory backed up by Premier League supercomputer

2 hours ago 3

Jamie Carragher's assertion that only Arsenal can deny itself the Premier League title isn't far from the truth.

Opta's supercomputer has positioned the Gunners as overwhelming favourites to secure their first championship in over two decades. Mikel Arteta's squad stretched their advantage at the summit to six points following a commanding victory over Tottenham in the North London Derby.

Eberechi Eze's hat-trick and Leandro Trossard's strike meant Richarlison's excellent effort proved meaningless. Whilst claiming local bragging rights against their neighbours, Arsenal firmly cemented itself championship credentials, reports the Mirror.

Manchester City and defending champions Liverpool both suffered defeats to Newcastle and Nottingham Forest respectively. This convinced Carragher that it might be Arsenal's moment.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he remarked: "The only team that can stop Arsenal winning the league is Arsenal; they are the best team. They are the best squad.

"The only thing that can stop them is their own heads, their own mentality. Maybe this crowd getting nervous in March and April, if the league is still up for grabs by then.

"This would be the one. If they didn't win it, I think we'd all point the finger at them and say, 'You threw this away'. I don't think that's ever been the case before.

Opta's Supercomputer had its say on the Premier League

"I always think the case has been that there has been a team slightly better than them in the Premier League, but that is definitely not the case this season."

According to Opta, Arsenal possess a 74.56 per cent chance of clinching the title.

The remaining contenders include Manchester City (14.3 per cent), Chelsea (3.88 per cent) and Liverpool (2.13 per cent).

Despite his team's commanding position, Arteta remains grounded and refuses to consider their current advantage as decisive.

"In this league, not much," he said. "We are doing really well, we've been really consistent, and that's it.

"I mean, when you look at the results, whether they win or lose, the difference in the scoreline and actually what happens in games is really small. We know that.

"We need players back immediately today. We've got Noni back on the pitch, which is great, but we're still missing a lot, a lot of important players, and we're going to need all of them."
