Jamie Carragher's 'no way back' fear for Mohamed Salah amid Arne Slot standoff

1 day ago 7

Mohamed Salah might have "no way back" at Liverpool following his outburst at Leeds United last weekend. That is the view of Reds legend Jamie Carragher.

Egyptian forward Salah grabbed the headlines when he spoke to reporters at Elland Road on Saturday, revealing that his relationship with Arne Slot was, in his eyes, completely broken down. He suggested the club had "thrown him under the bus" and that he felt he was being made an unfair scapegoat for the early-season poor performances.

Carragher has criticized Salah for being selfish this week, with Slot only having left him out of his Liverpool starting XI for three games. He then missed the trip to Inter Milan in the Champions League.

"Obviously, the headline-grabbing decision was dropping Salah," Carragher wrote for The Telegraph. "When [Arne Slot] did so, no one thoroughly analysing performances this season felt that was the wrong call.

"Slot had to act, and taking such a drastic and brave decision could be interpreted as even he knew time was running out.

"What no one foresaw was the impact of the Salah interview and what a difference that has made. Once Salah spoke out, just like the supporters, Liverpool’s executives were never going to back the player over the manager.

"There might be no way back for Salah now that he is heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, but I genuinely hope there is.

"Even though I have been furious about what he said last weekend, it would be an absolute travesty if that interview is remembered as his last meaningful act for Liverpool.

"He has done too much for the club for that to be so. He owes it to himself to make sure he is afforded a farewell fit for a legend whenever that might be. If that means he has to apologize, so be it.

"As things stand, it would be no surprise if Liverpool sold Salah to fund another spree in January because the lack of resources on the substitutes bench in midweek was extraordinary, given how much was spent last summer.

"That was a key takeaway from another dramatic Anfield week. Slot’s squad is weaker than it should be, but the past two weeks have at least demonstrated that the same cannot be said of the manager."

Slot said on Friday that he would speak with Salah about his participation in the weekend's game with Brighton. Depending on the outcome of that discussion, a decision will be made on whether the 33-year-old makes the matchday squad.

Liverpool.com says: Salah coming back into the fold will essentially be down to him. He can definitely be reintegrated, but that will require a climbdown from the position he set out so publicly last week.
