Jamie Carragher's two-word verdict says it all as Liverpool leaves it late once again

1 hour ago 41

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher needed just two words to sum up his former side's late victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, with Virgil van Dijk powering home a late header.

Dominik Szoboszlai put the ball in from a set-piece, with Van Dijk rising highest and directing the ball into the corner. Marcos Llorente had leveled minutes earlier, only for Liverpool to edge ahead again.

So far this season, Liverpool has scored late goals against Bournemouth, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Burnley and now Atletico Madrid. And while the pattern cannot continue, few of a Reds pursuasion would be unhappy with something similar happening against Everton on Saturday.

Taking to X/Twitter, Carragher simply wrote the words "Devil's Club", referencing that Liverpool continues to find a way of getting over the line against the odds.

"We need to get back to winning a bit simpler and easier," Andy Robertson said. "The assistant manager turned to me when Virgil put it in and said he's getting too old for it, so I can't imagine what the fans are like.

"It's a great thing to have, being able to keep going until the end. When you're 2-0 up and playing so well in the first half it should've been a more comfortable night."

Liverpool left it late again to secure three points

On his opening goal, he added: "I was just trying to get in the line of the keeper, so he couldn't see. It's a great finish, give me the Puskas award now!

"But no, honestly I didn't know anything about it. It was a great start and thank goodness it went in. We've got a lot of new players, they need to settle in. Playing for a big club like this isn't easy.

"They've all done really well. They're the future. They're the ones going to take this club forward. They've shown glimpses and they're only going to get better."

"We try, we kept pushing for the 3-1," Van Dijk added. "We concede the equaliser, massively deflected.

"It was not great. We found a way again. We were dangerous in our set-pieces anyway, they were pretty aggressive I must say. I'm glad I got the winner.

"They're a team that never gives up, they have quality players that can punish you if you're not there in a split second, if you're a little bit too late and they punished us before the break and after the break we try to go for the 3-1.

"They get a bit of confidence from that as well. But we have to keep going and show the resilience we've been showing for many years and it was another great European night here again."
